SHANG Rong was born in April 1978 in Dongtai, Jiangsu Province. Member of Jiangsu provincial CPPCC,PhD in Philosophy, Professor of the Department of Philosophy, Nanjing University. He studied with Prof. WU Weishan and Prof. LAI Yonghai.

SHANG Rong has been engaged in the research and teaching of traditional culture, specializing in the field of Chinese Buddhist culture and art, Zen canon, the aesthetics of Song and Ming poetry, the study of ancient Chinese sculpture, the creation and research of Zen painting and calligraphy, and contemporary sculpture art.

SHANG Rong has published many monographs, translations and edited books in Zhong Hua Book Company, China Literature and Art Publishing House, Culture and Art Publishing House and Baihua Literature and Art Publishing House. He is the editor-in-chief of the National Textbook Committee’s general high school textbook “Fine Arts – Sculpture”, and has independently chaired several projects of the National Social Science Foundation, the National Social Science Foundation Art Project, and the Humanities and Social Science Foundation Youth Project of the Ministry of Education. SHANG Rong is the sub-project leader of the national major art project “Chinese Sculpture in the Century”, and his participation in the large-scale Buddhist series “General History of Buddhism in China” (15 volumes) has won 5 provincial and ministerial awards. His academic achievements have been included in academic journals such as “Literary and Artistic Studies”, “Journal of Southeast University”, “Fujian Forum”, “Ethical Studies”, “Huxiang Forum” and “Academia Bimestris”. Professional reviews have been published in Guangming Daily, People’s Daily (Overseas Edition), China Culture Daily, Literary and Art Daily and other media.

SHANG Rong is a representative of the 11th National Congress of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles; a representative of the 9th National Art Congress; Deputy Secretary General of the Youth Federation of Jiangsu Province; Deputy Secretary General of the Nanjing Youth Federation; Chairman of the Young Artists’ Association of Jiangsu Province; Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the Young Artists’ Association of Jiangsu Province; Vice Chairman of the Nanjing Artists’ Association and Chairman of the Nanjing Young Artists’ Association; Member of the Chinese Artists’ Association and the Chinese Calligraphers’ Association Member; Member of the Sculpture Art Committee of China Artists Association, Deputy Secretary General of China Urban Sculptors Association, Deputy Director of Sculpture Art Committee of Jiangsu Artists Association, Chairman of Jiangsu Sculptors Association.

SHANG Rong’s sculptures have been collected and displayed by the National Art Museum of China, China Central Television and other institutions at home and abroad. The sculpture “The Art Boat Spreads Across the Sea” won the bronze medal in the 13th National Art Exhibition; the sculpture “Mother’s Love – Care” was selected and nominated for the 12th National Art Exhibition and won the prize, and was permanently collected by the National Art Museum of China; The sculpture “Mother’s Love – Embrace” was selected as the first “CCTV Sculpture Competition” and won the third prize, and is in the permanent collection of CCTV; the sculpture “Zhou Dunyi” was collected by the Municipality of Benevento, Italy and is permanently displayed in the Palazzo Moschitti; the sculpture “Sindberg” (Sino-Danish cooperation) was presented as a gift from the Nanjing Municipal Government and was permanently inaugurated in Mindpark, Aarhus, and was personally presented by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark unveiled the statue in person to express her recognition. SHANG Rong was awarded the 5th Wenhua Award of Jiangsu Province and selected as one of the first “Purple Gold Cultural and Artistic Talents” by the Propaganda Department of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee.
