Symposium on Strategy for Major Science and Technology Infrastructure for Atomic-level Manufacturing held in Nanjing

On June 13, the Symposium on Strategy for Major Science and Technology Infrastructure for Atomic-level Manufacturing was held in Nanjing. Attendees included Zhang Guohui, First-level Inspector of the Department of Science, Technology and Informatization of the Ministry of Education; Yang Xinzong, Deputy Secretary-General of the Jiangsu Provincial Government; Tan Tieniu, Chair of NJU CPC Council and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Chen Xuedong, Deputy General Manager and Chief Engineer of China National Machinery Industry Corporation and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE); along with 19 academicians from both academies, and 6 chief designers of major national science and technology infrastructures. Jiang Min, Deputy Mayor of Nanjing City, attended the meeting.

In his speech, Zhang Guohui pointed out that atomic-level manufacturing is an original and transformative manufacturing technology recognized internationally as a major frontier in science and technology. The preliminary research project for major science and technology infrastructure in atomic-level manufacturing reflects the determination, confidence, and strong support of local governments in building major infrastructures. He expressed three expectations: first, fully consolidate consensus within the scientific community; second, expedite the preparations for the "Fifteenth Five-Year Plan";  and third, coordinate the advancement of technological innovation in atomic-level manufacturing. Zhang Guohui encouraged the participants to refine scientific goals, plan facility frameworks, clarify facility applications, and assist in the better construction and development of major facility projects. He hopes that the project will lead to breakthroughs in foundational theories and key technologies of atomic-level manufacturing, laying a solid foundation for the high-quality development of China's high-end manufacturing industry in the long term and helping China seize the high ground in global technological competition.

Tan Tieniu welcomed the guests and expressed heartfelt gratitude for their long-term support for NJU's development. He noted that in recent years, NJU has thoroughly implemented the spirit of President Xi Jinping's important reply to the young scholars returning from overseas, striving for excellence in promoting technological self-reliance and self-strengthening, refining scientific goals, building technological innovation platforms, and aiming to produce more impactful research results that serve major national strategic needs and promote technological progress. Recently, the university announced the "Nanjing University 789 Science and Technology Research Plan," focusing on technological frontiers, major technological breakthroughs, and industrial development. Atomic-level manufacturing represents the future direction of manufacturing technology's deep dive into the microcosm, and is a crucial tool for Jiangsu's construction of a globally influential industrial technology innovation center and a competitive advanced manufacturing base. NJU has established a leading advantage in atomic-level manufacturing, laying a solid foundation for building major science and technology infrastructure in this field. Now, with strong support from local governments, the project has made significant progress. Tan Tieniu hopes that participants will offer valuable opinions to jointly create a major science and technology infrastructure project with international influence, forming a source of scientific innovation and driving future industrial transformation and upgrading.

Tan Tieniu and Yang Xinzhong awarded certificates to scientific advisors for the major science and technology infrastructure in atomic-level manufacturing.

Chen Xuedong and NJU's Vice President Lu Yanqing signed a cooperation agreement.

Zheng Hairong, Vice President of NJU and Academician of the CAS, presided over the meeting.

Zhan Wenlong, Academician and former Vice President of the CAS chaired the consultation and discussion session. The expert group listened to a report by Professor Song Fengqi, the project's chief scientist, on the major facility construction plan and engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions. They fully affirmed the design concept, scientific foundation, key technology reserves, and preliminary engineering construction plan of the atomic-level manufacturing science and technology infrastructure, providing valuable opinions on the technical plan and conditions support for the major facility. The meeting formed the expert group's strategic consultation and demonstration opinions.

Before the meeting, participating academicians, experts, and scholars visited the Nanjing Institute of Atomic Manufacturing and the preliminary research project site for atomic-level manufacturing facilities.

Attendees include Xu Guanghui, Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Science and Technology; Cai Jianfeng, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Development and Reform Commission; Gu Yuehua, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education; leaders of relevant departments of Nanjing City and Pukou District; heads of relevant departments and colleges of Nanjing University; and over 60 experts and scholars from universities and research institutes nationwide.
